2D Class Week 16 Figure Drawing Turn In

Here are my three pieces I am submitting for our life drawing turn-in. These are three of my favorite pieces I made in our life drawing class this semester. I took these pieces and added value to them in Photoshop but all of the line work had been done with live models in class.

Here is some other work I did in class this semester.

Week 15 Final Delivery (All Material)

This week for our Oz project I worked primarily on the castle asset pieces for our level. We brainstormed this week on what we could add to the final level in terms of the castle entrance and I was mostly in charge of implementing these changes. I added a bit more geometry to the mesh of the castle base and tried to complicate the geo to look jagged. I also created a grand entrance for the castle, a door to be used as a door/drawbridge, and UV'd the castle roof and entrance. The UV's I created specifically to highlight areas where Francisco wanted to add detail textures. They are not perfect because I am still becoming accustomed to the UVing process but it was an interesting exercise to take on for this week and I felt like I learned a bit more about a part of the 3D process I haven't explored much of yet.

2D Class Week 14 Concept Round 04 (Final Color)

This week for our Oz project I took the original mesh of the bridge and added small levels of detail to the original model. I steered the bridge back from the sculpt due to the normal map being too distracting compared to the other proxy models in our scene. I also separated out the top portion of the castle and smoothed the hard edges on the towers/features. Lastly, I pushed the lamp mesh further to look more organic.

2D Class Week 13 Concept Round 03 (Value Pass 02)

This week for our Oz project Melissa took over the environment thumbnails and I did more work on the environment proxy's for the VR level. I took the bridge I made last week and brought it into ZBrush to sculpt. I then took that sculpt, baked it in substance, and brought the result into UE4 as a blueprint. I also worked on making the lamp look more organic and less boxy.

2D Class Week 12 Concept Round (Value Pass 01)

This week for our Oz project we pushed our thumbnails from last week further and focused on value in our compositions. I took the notes we received on the environment thumbnails from last class and worked on pushing the two best castle designs we had. My goal was to add features that were discussed last week and to iterate a bit on the two design choices that were pointed out as being the two stronger designs.

I also tried to push the bridge proxy we made previously so that it's design fit in more with our target artist's style. I cut down the size to be used as pieces that would be connected together in Unreal, as well as adjusted the piece in such as way that  it could be tiled together more easily when put together in the engine.

2D Class Week 11 Concept Round 01 (Thumbnails)

This week for our Oz project we started developing thumbnails for our characters and environments. We also continued pushing our 3D proxy work and VR level. Because I have been working with Francisco on the castle environment for our witch and monkey characters I worked on developing the environment thumbnails. The goal for these thumbnails was to explore different shapes/feelings for the witch's castle and the path leading up to her lair. I took Melissa's design from the previous week as a starting point for the designs and worked to further push the idea into different iterations. This week Francisco worked primary on the 3D aspects of the witch environment while I focused on the thumbnails, so I do not have any work to show this week from that part of the project.

We also spent our time Friday in class to work on a piece for our project. I did a quick design of the interior of the castle that isn't quite finished.

2D Class Week 10 Concept Discovery With 3D

For this week for our 2D Wizard of Oz project we explored different methods of using various digital 3D modeling/sculpting programs to develop concept pieces. We also improved upon our work from the previous weeks based on the feedback we had previously received. I spent about 4 hours this week working on this part of the project.

New concept made by Melissa for the castle. We changed direction drastically from the previous concept

Here it is in Maya using the Toon shader and outlines. Francisco modeled the base of the castle seen here and I modeled the tower and "floating rock" the castle is sitting on

Here is a line up of some gravestones and some rocks I made as concept pieces to test out the Toon shader

Close up of the gravestones, Lindsay had talked to our group this week about ideas for the transition into the witches castle. She brought up the idea of having a graveyard in between the castle and the forest.

2D Class Week 09 Shape Language

This week we developed off of our original project reference research and created different "shape languages" to use for concept creation. We also used this shape language to create proxy models to use in VR to discover the sense of scale to our world and what we plan on creating. This part of our concept project took me around 3 hours to complete

I had made additional shape language references for different images, but I kept those aside as reference and learning. These images above show the intentions of our project clearest out of all the shape language studies I conducted.

I worked with Melissa to further the castle design, the result here is a rough sketch that will be worked on

I also made a quick proxy model of the bridge. I started by making three different designs:
A basic model

A model that was a bit more complicated

An even more complicated model
My group liked the medium complexity model the best.

2D Class Week 08 Artist Discovery

For this first week working on our concept project we were tasked with finding reference on our art style, content, and other aspects of the project such as mood an lighting. This part of the project took me around 3 hours to complete

We created a team Pinterest board which can be found here.
Our Pinterest inspiration board

I added reference to the board, along with my fellow teammates, to help build our part of the project. Below are some examples of pieces I added and plan to use for inspiration.

Here are some of the pages I created as reference to use for the project.
